Sheffield City Council election, 2014

Elections to Sheffield City Council were scheduled to take place on 22 May 2014〔(Types of Election ) Sheffield City Council〕 as part of the United Kingdom local elections, 2014 coinciding with the European elections.
There were 29 seats up for election, one third of the council with a double vacancy in Walkley. The last election in 2012 increased Labour's majority over the Liberal Democrats with 60 Councillors to 22 Lib Dems and 2 Greens.
Since the 2010 elections when these seats were last contested, the Lib Dem elected in Walkley has defected to Labour, the Lib Dem elected in Beauchief & Greenhill also defected to Labour, the Lib Dem elected in Fulwood died and was replaced with another Lib Dem, and the Labour member in Manor & Castle also died and was replaced with another Labour member.
Labour were defending 19 seats (including the two defections), 17 of which they successfully held in 2012. The Liberal Democrats were defending 10 seats (not including the two defections), 4 of which they lost to Labour in 2012. The Greens were not defending any seats, already having the two seats in Central that were not up for election this year and were likely to target gaining the third seat from Labour. The Conservatives, UKIP and other parties had no councillors.
A total of 164 candidates stood for the 29 vacancies. Labour, the Liberal Democrats and the Greens all stood a full slate of 29 candidates. UKIP stood 27, and the Conservatives 24. The Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition contested 21 seats, while five Independent candidates also stood.〔https://www.sheffield.gov.uk/dms/scc/management/corporate-communications/documents/government-politics-admin/elections-democracy/2014/Statement-of-Persons-Nominated-in-Local-Elections/Statement%20of%20Persons%20Nominated%20in%20Local%20Elections.docx

With a council majority of 36 and defending 19 seats it was almost mathematically impossible for Labour to lose control of the council, as Labour would have need to lose all 19 of those 19 seats to lose control. Even then Labour would still have been the largest party.
